DVR Guide - DMR4-MPEG4

The DMR4 digital video recorder has been updated to include many features that are found only in more expensive models.

Based on MPEG4 compression this DVR provides high recording resolution, fast frame rates, LAN connection and full triplex operation.

Image Sampling and Recording Rates

Utilising the MPEG4 algorithm high-quality images are recorded with small file sizes . This allows longer recording capacity per hard disk.

Recording rates of up to 100 frames per second are available shared across all channels. This means you can record in real time (25fps) on 4 channels. The resolution of each camera image at this recording rate will be 352 x 240 pixels. This is termed CIF resolution.

Unlike some recorders that only allow quad playback at 100fps the DMR4 images can be played back as an individual channel.

The DMR4-MPEG recorder has one of the highest recording resolutions of 720 x 576 pixels. At this resolution the maximum recording rate is 25fps, shared across all channels.

This makes the DMR4-MPEG4 recorder suitable for a very wide range of applications. Whilst it may seem beneficial to record at the highest possible rates bear in mind you will fill the hard drive quicker.

As a guide line here are recommended recording rates for each camera for typical applications.

Application Typical Recording Rates (Frames per Sec)
Car Parking, external people movement 0.5-2fps
Office, shop 2fps
Money counting 3.5-7.5fps
Traffic monitoring 5-25fps

When comparing with the specifications of other DVRs make sure the recording rates are not quoted in fields per second. (1 frame = 2 fields)

Recording Modes

Image quality settings can be chosen from Best, High, Normal and Basic.

Recording modes are Manual, Timer, Motion, Alarm or Remote.

Timer mode allows the user to select start and end times of recording.

Motion detection recording is provided by utilising a 16 x 12 grid to set or blank out areas of unwanted movement. The sensitivity of detection can be varied and the number of squares of the grid to be activated can be user defined. This gives one of the most comprehensive motion detection settings allowing wind blown trees or small objects like animals to be ignored, hence, reducing false activations.

Alarm recording allows triggering from an external source.

Remote recording allows the user to control the recording from a remote location by connecting to the recorder over a network or broadband connection. This feature is often only found on more expensive recorders.

Pre-alarm recording is available with a buffer size of 8MB. This works by the unit continuously recording  but only saving the information if the alarm or motion detection is triggered.

Recording times are dependant on the HDD size and frame rate/quality settings.

The DMR4-MPEG4 product can accommodate one disk with a capacity of 160-500GB.

Recording Capacities for 4 Channel 500GB

These times are approximate as MPEG4 compression reduces the file size if subsequent frames have not changed. These are based on continuous recording. Times for a 250GB hard drive will be approximately half that of the 500GB.

Monitor

There are 2 monitor outputs, Main and Call,  which can be connected to a standard composite sync. CCTV monitor.

An optional VGA output allowing the use of any standard PC type LCD monitor can be provided by using the M-VIDEOCONSOLE product.

Covert Monitoring

Certain channels can be blanked out in the live view but are still recorded for review by the administrator.

Triplex Operation

Recording can continue while playing back or reviewing images. Triplex operation is available even when viewing over a LAN or the internet.

Accessing the menu to make set-up changes disables recording. Menu access is password protected to administrator and conditional users.

Network

A network connection is standard. Ethernet TCP/IP and remote view software are provided as standard.

An example of the Remote View API is shown below.

You can also view the images through Internet Explorer.

The remote view allows full control of Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras (PELCO D).

Alarm notifications can be set-up as email images or uploads to an FTP site's specific account

Backup

Backup can be made across a LAN/internet connection to a PC  where you can use the PC's CD burner to made copies. Additionally you can backup to a standard VCR.

Search Modes

Finding the required event can be achieved by searching in percentage, date/time or event mode.

Additional features

1 channel audio recording, video loop through and 2 x digital zoom on playback.
